Accomplishments
The mission of the
Hawaii AHEC is to improve the health of the underserved through education.
There are four main areas of concentration (represented in the Cycle
of Aloha):
- Educating and recruiting
students to health professions from K-16 schools
- Educating health
professions students in the rural and underserved communities of Hawaii,
often in multiprofessional teams
- Recruiting health
care professionals to rural and underserved areas and providing continuing
education
- Providing community
based and community driven education for all underserved groups in Hawaii
Important areas of concentration are improving video teleconferencing
capabilities as well as telemedicine and telehealth utilization, and
performing health and health workforce needs assessments.
Who does AHEC
serve?
- Kids/students thinking
about careers in health sciences:
- We can sponsor
visits to your school to talk about health careers, or for you and
other students to come to research laboratories and schools on Oahu.
- You can apply
to participate in health science career community programs on Kauai,
Molokai, Maui, Oahu, and Big Island.
- We can find
you a science career mentor/research
mentor/research project/volunteer
experience.
- We can help
you apply for health graduate schools (writing personal statement
and interviewing skills.

- We can help
you take part in continuing education opportunities through distance
learning modalities.
- We can help
you find jobs in rural and underserved
areas.
- We can help
get you connected with health professions schools and provide opportunities
to teach or mentor students.
