We are committed to supporting all of Hawaii’s students in their journey to becoming healthcare professionals. AHEC has a wide range of programs available to assist students on their journeys toward their dream health careers.

Learn about programs by AHEC and our student membership program, the Pre-Health Career Corps (PHCC). All AHEC programs are completely free and available to any student in Hawaii who is pursuing a career in healthcare, from high school to post-grad.You can also learn more about programs from around the community that share our vision of empowering Hawaii’s youth to achieve their goals of becoming healthcare professionals.

AHEC is excited to share the opportunities and resources to help your students find the health career that fits them. Open to classes of all sizes, from K – 12. Available on Oahu and neighbor islands upon request.

Topics include: Introduction to Health Careers, Education Pathway to Medicine, Clinical Skills Workshops (Vital Signs, Splinting, Suturing), Problem-Based-Learning Case Demo.

Tours of the John A. Burns School of Medicine

Participate in campus tours, including tours of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). We coordinate school tours of SimTiki, the Cancer Center, the Anatomy Lab and the Center for Clinical Skills. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, tours of JABSOM are limited. Contact ahec@hawaii.edu to see if your group is eligible for a tour of JABSOM.

Teaching Resources – How to Interview a Patient

As Career and Technical Education is becoming more prevalent, you may have some questions about what healthcare professionals are actually doing. AHEC is creating resources for CTE teachers to learn from and use in the classroom. Resources from active professionals with years of patient experience, packaged into a FREE and accessible package.

 

Our first video is about how a physician would conduct patient interviews. A vital skill that is handled differently by many professionals, all with the same goal of establishing trust and developing an effective care plan for patients.

Scientific poster presentations are a very common way of presenting your ideas and research in a standardized format, especially in a competitive setting. Learn how to create a winning poster from the Director of the INBRE PATHways program. Scientific poster presentations are a great way to gain valuable research skills, presentation skills, and exposure to the greater scientific community.

Health Career Navigator

The Hawaii Health Career Navigator helps students explore the various health related careers available to them in the state of Hawai’i. The book, available in hard-copy and online, provides job descriptions, salary info, training requirements, areas of specialization and job growth information for 95 health careers.

Navigators are provided for FREE to students and teachers who request them. Contact AHEC@hawaii.edu to request a navigator and companion booklet.

ClimbHI Bridge

Founded in 2009, ClimbHI seeks to inspire students to finish high school and proceed to post-secondary education or employment by exposing them to future career paths and the steps necessary to achieve those goals.

ClimbHI is a Hawaii-based 501(c)(3)nonprofit that focuses on three main program areas: Leadership, Exploration, Inspiration (LEI) events; the Service Excellence Certificate for high school students; and the ClimbHI Bridge online portal that connects businesses, educators and students. ClimbHI also oversees several awards programs for educators and businesses.
