Hawaiʻi Healthcare Education Loan Repayment Program (HELP)

The Hawai‘i/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center is pleased to announce the Healthcare Education Loan Repayment Program (HELP), funded by the Hawai‘i State Legislature. HELP provides qualified educational loan debt repayment to health professionals licensed, or otherwise certified, to practice in and provide care to patients in Hawai‘i. The Internal Revenue Service defines Qualified Educational Loans under 26 USC 221(d)(1). The State expects HELP to help improve the number of providers in medically underserved areas of Hawai‘i, as well as improve the recruitment and retention of healthcare workers caring for the people of Hawai‘i by lessening the burden of large educational debt.

Beginning in 2019, eligible healthcare providers who serve as preceptors to eligible students may apply for the credit. This tax incentive is expected to increase the number of providers who are willing to serve as preceptors for students who will eventually become primary care providers in Hawai‘i.

Hawaiʻi Physician Workforce Study

The Hawaii Pacific Basin AHEC conducts an annual assessment of Hawaiiʻs physician workforce. We take a census of everyone who holds a Hawaii Medical License to see how many full-time practicing physicians Hawaii has in all specialties and geographic locations.

The findings of our study are published annually, and are available on the AHEC website for public access. Click the link for more information, to access reports, and get involved.
